Aiming for World Championship gold! šŖ
Hi Tobias, tell us a little about yourself. Who are you, and how long have you been working at Implenia?
My name is Tobias Andersson, and I live in Ć mmeberg with my wife and three kids. I was born and raised in the same town, and Iāve been working at Implenia for over four yearsāfive years this coming April. I'm a happy and easy-going person who loves to work! At Implenia, Iām a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, but primarily I do concrete spraying and reinforcement work. I come from the mining industry, which I got into through a friend. I started my career driving trucks, then moved into mining, and ended up staying there.
How did your journey in arm wrestling begin?
A new colleague in the mine told me he trained and competed in arm wrestling. I thought, āI could easily beat himā, but I was completely wrong. He invited me to try it out one day, so I did, and I was humbly defeated by a 15-year-old girlā¦
When did you realize that you wanted to pursue arm wrestling at a professional level?
I got hooked quickly because it was so much fun! It's intense, and you must use your entire body to get where you want. I think it was the upward curve, the resistance, and how challenging it was that drew me in more and more. In my first competition, I ended up in second place, and that stuck with me. If I donāt get to arm wrestle today, I donāt feel good.
What motivates you to keep training and competing?
My clubmates and my wifeās support mean everything. Thanks to them, I want to keep competing and training!
For those who donāt know, how does the sport work?
Arm wrestlers are divided by weight and age. There are different classes, from lightweight to super heavyweight. In between, there are classes based on age. Over 40 is "master," over 50 is "grand master," and then thereās "senior grand master." In addition, there are classes from junior to senior.
What do you enjoy the most about arm wrestling as a sport?
The family atmosphere in the sportāwherever you go, you are part of the family. Thereās no hate in this sport; everyone is welcomed with open arms. Sure, the seconds at the table are intense, but after that, itās all about love. Itās very different from other sports.
What does your training routine look like?
I try to arm wrestle at least twice a week, spending at least four hours specifically arm wrestling with a partner at a table. Otherwise, I train my body as much as I can and fit in as much static and repetitive training as possible. I also do a lot of technique training in daily life, like finding good angles for static training when carrying shopping bags. If I sum it all up, itās about three days of gym training and two arm wrestling sessions a week, plus whatever I can fit into my daily routine.
What mental skills are essential for success in arm wrestling?
Staying calm is crucial. My clubmates often tell me to relax because I tend to get too hyped before a competition and become a bit too tense. At the last Swedish Championship, I really found my inner calm, and things went really well.
How do you prepare for a World Championship?
This is my first World Championship, and Iād say the biggest difference compared to a "regular" competition is the mental aspect. The preparations themselves arenāt that different. Itās about getting your mind to realize that itās a World Championship and not a local competition.
Do you have any role models you look up to?
The three professional arm wrestlers from my club (VƤtternbrytarna Motala Arm Wrestling Club) ā Lovisa, Timmy, and Robin ā are the driving force for me, considering what theyāve achieved in their careers. I also check out other arm wrestlersā techniques, but Iād say Lovisa, Timmy, and Robin are the ones who inspire me the most.
How do you balance training with work?
Itās tough at times, but it means a lot that Implenia allows me to take time off to compete. Since I work shifts, I usually bring resistance bands with me to get in as much training as possible. The hotel where I stay is also very accommodating, and they let me use the gym even when itās closed.
Are there any lessons from the sport that you apply to your job?
Even if something feels impossible, you canāt give upš
Whatās been your most memorable moment in arm wrestling so far?
My first competition at home and then this yearās Swedish Championship. It went really well; I came first and second, in right and left hand. Iām right-handed, but Iām stronger in my left arm.
If you could challenge anyone, who would it be and why?
John Brzenk. It would be amazing to arm wrestle against him. Heās "the GOAT" in arm wrestling. When you talk about arm wrestling, you talk about John Brzenk. Heās won almost everything there is to win in the sport and is still active, even at 60 years old.
Do you have any tips for someone who wants to try arm wrestling?
Just go for it! You wonāt find a better family atmosphere, apart from your own family, of course.
What are your training goals?
In the short term, I want to compete in as many tournaments as possible after the World Championship. Looking two to three years ahead, I want to be so good in my class that whoever faces me knows itās going to be tough.
Finally, what are you most looking forward to at the World Championship?
Standing on top of the podium! Iām heading to the World Championship, just like any other competition, with the mindset that āitās just a hand and an arm, and theyāre coming home with me."
Thanks for the chat, Tobias! We wish you the best of luck in Greece!
