Good luck! Tunnel breakthrough at Semmering and Brenner
After a long and time-consuming excavation period, the breakthrough of the Gloggnitz Track 1 / Göstritz East Track 1 tunnel tubes took place on 12.9.2024 at TM 4.262. One track of the 27.3 km long Semmering Base Tunnel is now open to traffic. The tunnelling work was carried out in an extremely changeable geology under the most difficult geotechnical conditions with large water ingresses and up to 20 bar pressure, as well as radial deformations of up to 2.0 m. A big congratulations to the tunnelling teams and to all those involved in achieving this memorable project milestone!
Semmering Base Tunnel project
With a total length of 27.3 km, the Semmering Base Tunnel connects Lower Austria with Styria. The Austrian Federal Railways(ÖBB) has commissioned Implenia as part of a consortium with HOCHTIEF and Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH to build lot 1.1 of the Gloggnitz Tunnel, the 7.4 km long north-eastern section.
The Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT) is currently one of the most important major infrastructure projects in the heart of Europe and part of the new Austrian Southern Railway, a central axis on the trans-European route from the Baltic to the Adriatic.
In the Brenner Base Tunnel project, the first tunnel breakthrough on the Austrian side took place on September 17, 2024 in the Stillschlucht Pfons gorge. The ceremony took place in a tunnel area belonging to the northern main portal - where passenger trains will travel from Innsbruck main station towards Italy in the future. Here too: Good luck to the tunnelling teams and everyone involved!
Brenner Base Tunnel project
The Brenner Base Tunnel will be the world's longest underground rail link for passenger and freight traffic - a superlative crossing of the Alps. With a total length of around 64 kilometers, the Brenner Base Tunnel will be at the heart of the TEN-T core network corridor Scandinavia - Mediterranean after its planned completion in 2032.
Lot H41 is being executed on behalf of BBT by a consortium consisting of Implenia, Webuild and CSC Costruzioni. It is located in the northern section of the BBT - between the Innsbruck Still Gorge in the north and Pfons in the south.
