Justin, how do you become a compliance champion?
Justin, hats off! How is it that you know so much about compliance?
I've been working at Implenia since 2020 and you can tell that compliance is very important here: We have regular training courses and the topic is always brought to our attention in communications. Implenia Germany is also a certified EMB member, which means we were certified in the audit as "law-abiding and integer" in accordance with EMB value management in construction.
Were you involved here?
Yes, two years ago I was able to take part in the values audit for Civil Engineering Germany and take a detailed look at our KENIA corporate values: Collaboration- Excellence- Sustainability- Integrity- Agility. Everyone can find themselves in these values, they are comprehensible and tangible. We should work towards them every day. Integrity is one of them and is closely linked to compliance.
What do you actually do at Implenia?
I'm a major commercial project manager at Implenia Civil & Special Foundations (ICS) in the Civil Engineering division in Berlin. I do everything financial for the project - from the order notification before the ground-breaking ceremony to project completion after the warranty phase. Infrastructure construction fascinates me because it stands the test of time.
Award-winning compliance campaign
To introduce the new Code of Conduct, Implenia launched the internal campaign "NOT AT IMPLENIA! We live compliance.", which received the "INKOMETA Award" for successful internal communication in Berlin on October 8, 2024.
Of course, when it comes to contracts, everything always has to be right. Which project are you currently managing commercially?
I'm currently responsible for the new "Südbrücke" pedestrian bridge as part of the expansion of the Federal Chancellery west of the Spree. This is a two-part bridge between the Chancellery buildings. Federal government employees will be walking on the upper path from 2026. The lower path will be open to the public and will improve the network of paths in the Tiergarten area. Special civil engineering has already begun. And precisely because I have already worked in Germany and throughout Europe in my previous jobs - in Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Stockholm, for example - my current project naturally makes me particularly proud as an Urberliner.
As a native Berliner?
Believe it or not, I was born and raised in Berlin-Reinickendorf, about 50 meters as the crow flies from my Implenia office, and I now live just a stone's throw away. This is my "hood"! (laughs)
Apart from contract negotiations and contracts, how do you come into contact with compliance in your work?
For example, you meet competitors when you work for the construction industry association. In terms of competition law, you have to know what you can and can't talk about. As a construction service provider that often has public-sector clients, you are always in the spotlight, and rightly so. After all, you are building with taxpayers' money!
This is Justin in private
"I am a real family man and have three small children aged 2, 4 and 7. I enjoy traveling with my family. We go on short trips and city breaks, which I try to make suitable for children. I also play the guitar."
What makes Implenia special for you?
The cooperation and teamwork. Both are excellent and much better than I was used to in my previous jobs.
And is there anything else you're passionate about?
The promotion of young talent. As a trainer listed with the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, I try to attract young people and talent to the construction industry and to Implenia. This is all the more important now in times of a shortage of skilled workers.
