Subway expansion with depth
Stockholm is an infrastructure paradise: Above ground, 57 bridges connect the city's 14 islands. Underground, the Stockholm metro has been bringing the different parts of the city closer together since 1950. The Tunnelbanan, as it is called in Swedish, is currently undergoing major expansion. The aim is to keep pace with the rapid growth of the metropolitan region.
In a mega project, 30 kilometers of additional subway line and 18 new stations are being built. One of these is "Sofia Station". Located around 100 meters underground, it will be one of the deepest subway stations in the world.
The expertise of our professionals is required for this extraordinary infrastructure project. "We are building a total of 6 kilometers of tunnel and the subway station with an elevator shaft for eight high-speed elevators," explains Sofia Carlsson from Implenia Sweden. The work is challenging, partly because they have encountered unstable rock.
People behind the project
Sigrid Gunnemark is the project manager for the Sofia Station project at Implenia Sweden. In this interview, she describes the most impressive moments in this project and what is particularly important to her in her work.
Sofia Station requires broad and in-depth civil engineering expertise. Blasting, concreting, foundation work in earthworks: each individual task requires specific expertise and precise execution. Good, detailed planning is the key to success in this project.
The shaft for the lifts, which will transport passengers to Sofia Station and from there to the top in just 30 seconds, is particularly complex. Sofia Carlsson: "We are blasting 100 meters deep into the mountains - in the middle of the city. This means we are building in the tightest of spaces and under challenging conditions." It is a once-in-a-lifetime project with incredible team spirit for all of them on site, adds Sofia Carlsson. Everyone contributes their expertise and together they master every single milestone - until the first trains roll here in 2030.
