New Munot Bridge with innovative UHFB surfacing

The northern Munot Bridge is the main access to the historic fortress in Schaffhausen and is used daily by locals, tourists and for the delivery of goods at events. The existing bridge, built in 1961, was in need of renovation. Roland Strebel, Head of UHFB at Implenia, and construction manager Patrick Burkhardt agree: "Thanks to the use of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHFB) for the flooring, it was possible to meet the visual requirement of the monument protection authorities that the color of the new bridge should match the masonry of the fortress."
UHFB as the perfect solution for repairs
Thanks to its outstanding properties, UHFB offers a pioneering solution for the repair and reinforcement of infrastructure structures and has established itself as a proven and standardized building material in Switzerland. Based on the Swiss SIA standard 2052, UHFB has been successfully used for the repair and reinforcement of transport infrastructure structures since 2018.
"UHFB is an economical and fast solution for road and rail infrastructure structures."
Roland Strebel, Head of UHFB at Implenia
"Thanks to its high strength and durability, which is due to its significantly higher density, UHFB is resistant to chemical influences and mechanical loads," explains Roland Strebel. "The pumpable and sprayable UHFB is an economical and fast solution for road and rail infrastructure structures and is used for bridge waterproofing, bridge caps, but also as a road surface and gradient compensation."
Specific know-how for the production and installation of UHFB
UHFB places special demands on production and the installation process, as Roland Strebel further emphasizes: "Implenia has repaired over a dozen structures in Switzerland with UHFB to date and is now increasingly applying this expertise in Germany, where the first projects have already been successfully repaired. Others are currently in the planning phase."
The benefits of UHFB - ultra-high-performance fiber building material
Switzerland's transport infrastructure is under increasing strain and the life cycle of bridges and roads is decreasing. This is why Implenia, together with partners, has developed the ultra-high performance fiber construction material (UHFB). The construction material has the highest mechanical strength and durability as well as a high deformation capacity. It is also resistant to acid sulphate, frost and vapor. It is also characterized by its resistance to carbonation and mechanical abrasion. UHFB is an alternative to a total replacement of the object. Coupled with its durability, UHFB can reduce road closures and congestion times, which offers enormous added value in view of the increasing volume of traffic.
