Fehmarn Sound Crossing: Specialist Civil Engineering Contract Awarded

The rail link to the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is a key European project and sets new standards for transnational rail transport in Europe. In a pioneering contract model, Implenia, together with Züblin and Porr, has been awarded the contract for the specialist civil engineering package for the Fehmarn Sound crossing.

A multi-party agreement (MPA) on integrated project execution (IPA) was concluded between eight parties for the new Fehmarn Sound crossing. Under the partnership model, the alliance is jointly responsible for planning and implementing the complex infrastructure project.

As part of award package 6, Implenia, together with Züblin and Porr, is taking on the challenging specialist civil engineering work. This includes

  • Construction port incl. quay
  • Dry dock for the production of the tunnel elements
  • Excavations and shoring for tunnels and trough structures
  • Complex diaphragm wall and sheet piling work

The project structure of the IPA model enables close cooperation between all partners in the sense of "Best for Project" for an optimal result and sets a strong example for partnership-based construction.

Erwin Scherer, Head Civil Engineering at Implenia, emphasizes: "The project will eliminate a key bottleneck in the transport infrastructure and strengthen the connection between Germany and Scandinavia in the long term. We are delighted to be taking responsibility for this pioneering project together with ZÜBLIN and the PORR Group as part of the IPA model. The close cooperation of all project partners and the consistent best-for-project approach form the basis for the efficient and successful realization of this central link between Germany and Scandinavia."
