Same job, new place of work, new perspectives

Robin Boos works as an Application Manager at Implenia. He has a great talent for organization, which has already benefited many an internal Implenia event or the German Red Cross. What prompted him to move his job from Raunheim in Germany to Zurich in Switzerland and why he always finds opportunities to get involved outside of work.

Robin, what does an Application Manager actually do ? Our team makes sure that our colleagues on the construction sites and in the offices can use the applications they need for their work. We currently support and manage several hundred application programs for the entire Group - for example for structural analysis and design, marketing or learning. But our portfolio also includes applications that support other business processes. We are the point of contact for the business, receive its requirements and look for solutions. We always act as an interface between the business and the IT departments.

How does this work in practice ? Let's assume that an operational department is looking for an application for a specific structural analysis. If such a request comes to us directly or via the service desk, we clarify the criteria and requirements in detail with the employees. We can then either suggest an application from our portfolio to the team, for which we may need to obtain additional licenses, or we can evaluate a new application and support its introduction, from drawing up the contract to licensing, installation and implementation.

You swapped your job in Raunheim for one in Zurich. Why ? I had been working for Implenia, then still Bilfinger, since my apprenticeship. Now (after almost 11 years) I wanted to leave my comfort zone. Although I basically do the same job here as in Raunheim, a lot of things are easier here at Connect. The direct exchange with colleagues is so much more personal and you also get a better insight into Group IT. This opens up new perspectives and development opportunities.

What is important to you when working together ? Clear and open communication within the team and that you can rely on your colleagues.

We've heard that people can always count on you - not just in your job, but also when it comes to organizing Implenia events. I enjoy managing events. I worked as a bartender on the side for a long time and have some experience in the catering sector. I've helped organize and run Implenia events wherever I've been asked to - be it the Christmas party at the Raunheim site, the Implenia Germany Football Cup, trade fair appearances or smaller internal events. I really enjoy doing this, not only because I like celebrating, but also because I find it very easy to coordinate and organize both inside and outside of work. I am also convinced of the value of such events. The more people you get to know, the easier it is to work together beyond your own area. You know who you can turn to and become familiar with different topics. It's a completely different way of working. That's why I've already attended one or two come-together events at "Connect" in Zurich. I recommend this to everyone, especially new employees: It's a good opportunity and chance.
